The Ramalama walk: how to do the TikTok costume reveal

Last fact-checked 2026-11-02

Legs and shoes first, face last. The Ramalama walk (also called the “take a picture” trend or costume walk) is a ten-second reveal set to Róisín Murphy’s “Ramalama (Bang Bang)”.

What it is: film low to the ground while someone walks toward the camera in time with the beat, then tilt the phone up in one fast move when the whispered “taking a picture” moment hits, revealing the full outfit and face. It is most popular with Halloween costumes.

Heads up: this is a seasonal trend. Coverage says it peaks in the last days of October. As of 2026-11-02, this year’s peak has just passed.

How to do it, step by step

Based on the camera breakdowns in the guides listed under Sources. Timings are approximate.

  1. Pick the outfit and the spot. Make the costume work from the shoes up. Choose a clear path of a few metres with no steps or cables.
  2. Set the camera low. Hold the phone near the floor, vertical (9:16), wide lens. Keep the face out of frame. A friend usually walks backwards filming.
  3. Start the sound and walk on the beat. For roughly the first six seconds only legs and shoes are visible. Slow, confident steps, or drag a prop for drama.
  4. Whip the camera up on the whisper. One continuous upward tilt, not a cut. The guides stress this move is the trend.
  5. Pose. Give a wave, a hand-on-hip or a “taking a picture” gesture, then a twirl or laugh for the last few seconds.
  6. Add the sound in the app. Use TikTok’s or Instagram’s own sound library so the music is licensed for the platform, then post.
